Seasons
The turning of the year
Everything here belongs to a season: what grows, what is gathered, what is cooked and kept. The calendar draws on Eastern European folk traditions and on the American year I live in now.
- Spring The first green things. Nettles, new leaves, seedlings on every windowsill, and birds coming back.
- Summer The great gathering. Flowers at their peak, linden in bloom, cold herbal drinks, and the drying rack never empty.
- Autumn The cupboard fills. Roots, hips and berries, the last flowers before frost, and the first warm drinks of the year. Now
- Winter The evergreen season. Pine needles, citrus from far away, dried summer in jars, and long evenings for writing it all down.
